When are auditions?
TIP auditions for new members at the beginning of each semester. Check the Calendar page for exact dates.
What do I have to prepare?
Come prepared with a verse and chorus of a popular song that makes your voice sound fabulous when sung unaccompanied! Memorization is preferred, but words on a sheet are okay to bring in. And, of course we can give you a starting note!
Do I have to sing in front of everyone?
Everyone will warm up together, then we'll hear each auditionee individually. First we'll run you through a range check, then you'll sing your song. Next, we'll do a line of sightreading (don't be afraid!) and if there's time, a few passages of tonal memory and vocal percussion beats.
How many girls are you looking for? Are you only looking for specific voice parts?
The number of new singers varies semester to semester. Generally we take one to four singers each semester. As for voice parts, we look to fill holes in our group. Some semesters we need a really high soprano, sometimes we need a new bottom-of-the-barrel alto, sometimes we need a middle voice... we aim to make our group's blend the best it can be.
Are you all voice majors?
Nope, in fact, we're mostly SOC and SIS majors... but, we all share a love of singing and performing. Most of us have choir experience, but that's not a requirement.
What's the time commitment?
TIP is a serious commitment. We rehearse two to three times per week and attendance is mandatory at all sessions. We don't mean that TIP is your only activity, but it must be a priority. We have members who have religous responsibilities, are teaching assistants, have internships and are involved with Greek life-- it's just about time management.
What about dancing?
While we're not big on rehearsed choreography, we are big on "bopping": bend your knees, bounce to the beat... don't be afraid to move a little bit.
How do callbacks work?
We'll contact you if we'd like to hear you in a callback audition.
If I don't get in my first time, can I try out again?
Sure! We encourage singers to come to future audition sessions.
